In my letter yesterday, I discussed the connection between cholesterol and heart health. Click here to read yesterday's issue of the cholesterol series.
In a prior letter, I contended for supplementation's potential as a complement, or even an alternative, to conventional drug medications for managing cholesterol and bolstering cardiovascular health.
I’m thankful for the promise certain vitamins, minerals, and herbs hold for our heart's well-being.
However, like most things in medicine, there's nuance to consider.
I could give you a list of supplements helpful to heart health. For example, omega-3, CoQ10, magnesium taurate, and red yeast rice, to name a few.
But what are you supposed to do with that list?
Instead, today, I'd like to delve into some of the shortcomings of a supplement-centric approach. I don't want you going out there, carelessly swapping out your drug medications for supplements.
You need more than a one-sided approach to cholesterol care. You need more than just pills or capsules.
Too Simplistic: Most treatments have their limitations. But I’ve seen some natural health care providers hand out supplements like some conventional doctors prescribe drugs!
The heart's rhythm is only one part of a symphony of influences. From food to the environment, to stress, to walking—it all impacts your heart. Your plan to solve cholesterol issues must be comprehensive, also.
Navigating the Nuances: The world of supplements is huge and diverse. Without a seasoned guide, it's all too easy to do more harm than good, be it in dosages or timing and food combining.
When Supplements Meet Medications: The interplay between some supplements and medications—cholesterol drugs included—can be delicate. Little-known contraindications sometimes have unforeseen side effects.
Beyond the Pill: I know many people want a quick fix. Maybe you do. But supplements are only one chapter in the complex story of your health. They're supposed to complement a life rich in nutritious meals, invigorating activities, and peaceful practices.
Too Much! The Wisdom of Testing: There's a fine line between just right and too much when it comes to vitamins, minerals, and herbs. Periodic testing can help you tread this line with precision.
Nature & the Bottle: Some bottled nutrients find it hard to reach your tissues. Nutrition bottled in nature works better with your biochemistry. If you choose to supplement, you MUST still eat the foods associated with those nutrients to benefit from the food matrix.
Complete Reliance is a Mirage: When patients solely rely on supplementation, I’ve noticed they tend to neglect essentials like routine check-ups. Don’t do that, Reader.
I use high-quality supplementation in my practice when needed...
But I try to do so in an informed, safe, and helpful manner.
